I'll Take 10: Morphe Soulmatte Velvet Lip Mousse

Matte lipsticks were absolutely dominating the scene when I first started wearing full-glam makeup. My go-to shades were “Riri Woo”, “Riri Boy”, and “Velvet Teddy” from MAC Cosmetics. If you were wearing a MAC Cosmetics lipstick back then, you were definitely that girl – the girls that get it, get! The Colourpop matte lippies were also heavy in rotation, super affordable and available in almost every shade you could think of.

Since then, makeup trends have shifted and now it’s all about a super shiny gloss. We’ve all seen the looks and have likely joined in on the glowy-skin, glossy-lip trend. There’s still something about a matte lip that will always have my heart. Though, these days, I’m more interested in a soft matte than a true matte. Soft mattes give you that sleek, velvety finish without drying the heck out of your lips.

*The Morphe Soulmatte Velvet Lip Mousse enters the chat*

When I stumbled across this gem it was almost too good to pass on. This Morphe lippie was on sale at Ulta for about $7 and it normally retails for $14, who could say no to that? It also comes in about 10 shades and promises an air-whipped texture that resists setting into lip lines. Really they had me at $7, but the air-whipped texture and nude shades were added bonuses.

I will admit I have an endless supply of nude lip glosses, but I was in search of a velvet finish that I could wear when I wanted something a little more long lasting. I decided on the shades “Honey”, “Wifey”, and “Dearest” – a beige nude, cool-toned nude, and pink nude respectively. Upon first application I noticed just how smooth, air-whipped, and velvety it felt on my lips. The formula is also non-sticky which I appreciated because most matte lipsticks tend to be quite sticky once they dry down.

In addition to a great formula, I was so happy with the shades of nude I chose. Nudes can be tricky because the undertone can be the difference between a really cute, sleek lip or an ashy looking one. I usually stay away from warm or peach nudes since they end up looking more yellow on me, which I don’t love. Cooler toned nudes, however,  tend to complement my complexion much better.

On a more positive note, nudes are incredibly versatile. They work beautifully for both natural makeup looks and full glam moments – especially gorgeous with a smokey eye. In the age of lip combos, they’re also great for layering shades. In fact after getting a feel for each shade, I came up with a few really cute lip combos. Spoiler alert, they all included a dark brown lip pencil – if you know, you know. I was even able to layer the beige nude on the cool-toned nude to create a really pretty custom shade.

The Morphe Soulmatte Velvet Lip Mousse is a great addition to your lippies collection. These have easily become the nude lipsticks I always reach for when I do my makeup (I rarely reach for a color so reliable nude shades are very important!). She’s versatile, she’s long-lasting, and she can be layered with a gloss if you prefer a shiny finish. So with three already in my possession, of course I’ll take 10.
