I'll Take 10: Morphe Soulmatte Velvet Lip Mousse
Matte lipsticks were absolutely dominating the scene when I first started wearing full-glam makeup. My go-to shades were “Riri Woo”, “Riri Boy” and “Velvet Teddy” from MAC Cosmetics. If you were wearing a MAC Cosmetics lipstick back then, you were definitely that girl – the girls that get it, get! The Colourpop matte lippies were also in heavy rotation, super affordable and available in almost every shade you could think of.
Since then, makeup trends have shifted and now it’s all about a super shiny gloss. We’ve all seen the looks and have likely joined in on the glowy-skin, glossy-lip trend. Yet, there’s still something about a matte lip that will always have my heart. Though these days, I’m more interested in a soft matte finish as opposed to a true matte. Soft mattes give you that sleek, velvety finish without drying the heck out of your lips.

When I stumbled across this gem it was almost too good to pass on. This Morphe lippie was on sale at Ulta for about $7 — it normally retails for $14. Who could say no to that? It also comes in about 10 shades promising an air-whipped texture that resists settling into lip lines. Really they had me at $7, but the air-whipped texture and nude shades were an added bonus.
I will admit I have an endless supply of nude lip glosses, but I was in search of a velvet finish that I could wear when I wanted something a little more long lasting. I chose the shades “Honey”, “Wifey”, and “Dearest” (a beige nude, cool-toned nude, and pink nude respectively). Upon first application, I noticed just how smooth, air-whipped, and velvety it felt on my lips. The formula is also non-sticky which I appreciated because most matte lipsticks tend to be quite sticky once they dry down.
In addition to Morphe’s great formula, I was also happy with their nude color selections. Nudes can be tricky because the undertone can be the difference between a flattering lip or an ashy looking one. I usually stay away from warm or peach nudes since they end up looking more yellow on me - not the vibe. Cooler toned nudes, however, tend to complement my complexion much better.
On a more positive note, nudes are incredibly versatile. They work beautifully for both natural makeup looks and full glam moments. They’re especially gorgeous with a smokey eye and if you’re into layering shades, they work well for that too. While we’re on the topic of layering shades, I came up with a few really cute lip combos using other lip products. Spoiler alert, they all included a dark brown lip pencil – if you know, you know. I was even able to layer “Honey” (beige nude) on the “Wifey” (cool-toned nude) to create a really pretty custom shade.
The Morphe Soulmatte Velvet Lip Mousse can be a great addition to your lippies collection. They are the nude lipsticks I always reach for when I do my makeup. I rarely reach for a color, so reliable nude shades are very important! They’re versatile, long-lasting, and can be layered with a gloss if you prefer a shiny finish. With three already in my possession, of course I’ll take 10.
